This painting became the catalyst for the exhibition The Sovereign Spiral: Beyond the Loop.
At its centre is the spiral, a form found throughout nature, mythology and human experience. Unlike a circle, which returns to the same point, the spiral carries movement. It revisits familiar ground while continuing to expand, evolve and transform.
As the painting developed, layers of fragmented, mosaic-like marks emerged around the spiral. These fragments suggest the experiences, memories, relationships and challenges that shape a life. Some pieces fit together clearly, while others remain unresolved. Together they form a visual language of becoming.
For me, the spiral represents personal sovereignty—the moment we recognise that although patterns may repeat, we are not destined to remain trapped within them. We can meet old circumstances with new awareness. We can choose a different response. We can step beyond unconscious repetition and into conscious growth.
